Tik Tok: The New Musical.ly?
Tik Tok is a social media platform that allows creators to shoot up to sixty-seconds worth of content. What content exactly? It can vary from dancing to making specific jokes. Tik Tok is not just a place where you can have fun it is also a place where creators bring awareness to social injustices or racist remarks from our President.
The app is beneficial to teenagers because it not only has one of a kind relatable stories or experiences, it also is very stress relieving. After multiple long hours of studying the feeling of laying down and scrolling through Tik Tok is so relaxing. Many creators of Tik Tok are also educational. They often give tips on study habits and even scholarship opportunities.
My personal experience with Tik Tok is that I enjoy the app. As a dancer for eleven years, I often learn the most trending dances. Being a Cupertino cheerleader we always film ourselves doing the new trend. Currently, it is Fall 2020 which means it is the college app season for me. I am not going to lie, I often get inspiration from creators. Many videos on my “For You Page” are always “what not to write and what to write on your college apps” I personally do not post any of my Tik Toks but I do have almost Six-Hundred drafts on my account. As a person with a massive sweet tooth, I always want to bake something new. After baking brownies almost a dozen times over quarantine, Tik Tok has helped my venture into new baked goods. It has introduced me to desserts from all over the world. Last week I baked Honey Cakes which was a Norweigian recipe. Two nights ago I made Mexcian Churros which honestly was close to being as good as the ones at Disneyland.
As some of you might know or have seen on the news recently, the app is trying to be taken down by The Trump Administration. Tik Tok originates from China and is created by a technology company. President Trump wants to ban Tik Tok because he worries about security and personal information privacy. President Trump made an executive order on August 14, 2020, to give the app Ninety days to be bought from a U.S. company. Bill Gates, who is the co-founder of Microsoft and a Billionaire, has been one of the most interested and well-known buyers. Recently CNN came forward and said that Walmart is also interested in joining Gates. What makes Bill Gates interested in Tik Tok? His daughter Jennifer is a user/creator on the app. On multiple occasions, I’ve stumbled upon her and her dad making funny videos.
In my opinion, Tik Tok is an internet phenomenon that is a force to be reckoned with.
